The better solution is to send the appropriate responses to the appropriate situation. Drunk guy passed out on a bench? Send someone who will get him home safely and not sit on him until he’s dead. Man wanting to commit suicide? Send someone with psych experience and not someone who will hep get him killed. Marital dispute? Send someone with counseling experience instead of killing one (or both) of the parties involved.

Sure, if you have an armed bank robbery, send armed cops to deal with robbers, but for most situations, it doesn’t take executing the violator to ensure the law is observed. Maybe the cops should consider whether their actions will get them jailed, rather than falsifying their reports to justify killing an unarmed person.

If you’re so convinced you’ll do something unlawful as a policeman, maybe you shouldn’t be a policeman.

Cops have ALWAYS been on the pointy end of the stick w.r.t. the law. And there have ALWAYS been issues with how much protection they should get about “errors in the heat of the moment”. IMO, we’re seeing a pendulum shift toward more accountability that is the result of a long prior shift toward less, which has resulted in all the obvious abuses, many of which we have heard about on national news.

In the best of possible worlds, cops who make a legitimate mistake will get a fair hearing, will be told that their mistake was understandable, and will be managed so they don’t run into that kind of situation again: You don’t BLAME someone for getting it wrong in a tough situation, but you DO try to avoid letting them do that again, right? Of course this is NOT the best of all possible worlds, so Ramirez’s point has a little merit (once you file off the exaggeration). But even that’s good: We WANT cops to be thoughtful almost always: Fast reflexes are at their best in so very few situations.

Back in May 2020 Ramirez drew a beautiful and poignant cartoon that expressed the horror and sorrow of rioters and looters acting out during the early days of the Black Lives Matter movement. Unfortunately, today’s cartoon is just crap.

If the police had proper training and proper oversight they wouldn’t need so many lawyers.

Even the dumbest cop should know better than to shoot a person in the back.
