I’ll give Bucky some credit, it’s strange that you get a “strike” by NOT hitting the ball. Did you strike it or didn’t you?

Never understood NFL football. One guy’s staring at his junk. Tosses the ball through, narrowly missing ‘said junk’. The clown behind him holds the ball, looks left and right (now this is where in soccer they open up the game to the wings – but not in this mental disaster) he then runs straight into the other morons scratching themselves on the other side where they pile up on him. My dad who was from Poland said they should call this game “Pileups”. Toss, run, Pileup.

I actually raised the question of actual vs conceptual directions when I took a tai chi class after learning a bit about feng shui. Wanted to know if we should ideally be starting the standard routines facing any particular point of the compass.

What was it Yoda said about “try” and “do?”

It was originally a “try at goal”. Grounding the ball simply allowed the team to attempt to score with a kick. A successful kick “converted” the try into a goal.

The scoring has moved on, but the terminology remains.

As someone who lives in Spain I find American Football a refreshing change from watching 22 overpaid prima donnas falling over and crying when they chip a nail. Aussie rules is even better.

I really do appreciate Darby’s track record of clever “mid-panel” jokes. I typically enjoy the mid jokes more than the punchline.

Once upon a Holiday, in a basement rec room, my Sister sent, her toddler to see what we were doing.[Watching the Browns play the Bengals on their old black and white TV] My Niece reported back, that we were in the basement, watching the Black guys and the White guys play “fall down”.

“Football combines two of the worst features of modern American life: it’s violence punctuated by committee meetings. In addition, football demonstrates the manic division of labor that makes life confusing and, I should think, unsatisfying. I mean, who wants to grow up to be a third-and-long-yardage pulling guard?” — George Will
