Now the question is whether comic strip magic will allow the tree’s roots to hover in that void.

This seems to be a subtle analogy to humans trying to plant a few trees in an effort to save the planet and undo decades of excess. :) Maybe I’m reading too much into this but, see, the last panel is missing.

He’s lucky he wasn’t standing on the other side. The next panel might have been Horace falling like Wile E. Coyote.
