That’s a nice leg you got there, Mary. Pity if something were to break it.

It seems that Heart needs to learn humility, desperately!

A lesson in humility and acceptance is coming Heart’s way. Her Mom saw it coming!

Time for Heart to go to the library. Do some research on how to “take out” the competition without making it obvious… I know there have been movies about this but I’m drawing a blank on titles at the moment, but you don’t want your understudy to follow you on the stairs… one little nudge and she gets the break she needs.

Learning how to accept rejection is invaluable for any artist.

Wait, don’t tell me, let me guess: Heart doesn’t study her lines, until Dana becomes sick…on opening night.

Oh, Heart, that’s not a good look for you!!!

I hope this will be a comeuppance story and Heart will add something positive to her character…

I was understudy for Mortimer Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace in high school. My actual role was tutor for the guy who had the part. He was more popular than me (especially with the theater kids), but he wasn’t good at memorizing his lines. The teacher said she picked me for understudy because she knew I’d memorize the lines in no time and then could go over them repeatedly with the lead. And I’ll give him credit, he tried really really hard to do a good job. All that sincere honest effort on his part was why I didn’t end up resenting him. But he was in over his head and botched his lines terribly during the performance.

She will learn that when she is an adult, there will be lots of rejections for roles she tries out for. Better for her to learn humility now (Though I doubt this will happen) to prepare her for the theater world.

Feel sorry for you Heart. Maybe you shouldn’t get excited by getting a part in a play. Waitting to stay after school in Detention?

The real outrage is that Squiggledy Squiggle got the part of Scribble. How is that fair?

Why do you bother drawing the comic as if it’s about a bunch of middle schoolers – then give them all dialogs for late teens or 20 somethings?
