This has been ONE trial with ONE outcome that seems much fairer than many prior things. It’s NOT the wave of the future, though I do hope its example is understood and learned from. Lets not lose track of the number of other places that need to learn this lesson before we can feel that justice in the USA is actually colorblind (and so are the cops).

All it took was one fearless girl with a video camera, and witnesses courageous enough to stand up to an officer who looked defiant while killing a man. If you read the “official” report, Floyd would have ended up one of those unfortunate happenstances during a routine call.

But the allegorical figure of Justice still looks like a white woman in this representation.

This is the moment when police departments across the nation have been put on notice to reform their practices. If they choose not to, the passage of federal policing standards might be instituted.

So long as “justice” has a color component.. you will continue to have issues.

Right-wing media erupts in incoherent rage after Derek Chauvin is found guilty

With nationwide emotions running high following the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder George Floyd, right-wing media reacted in opposite fashion to the general public, attempting to infuriate followers and lash out at the verdict.

Many on the right, both in media and politics, invoked conservatives’ word of the year, suggesting that the trial was “rigged” or impacted by “mob rule.” Other, more “mainstream,” conservative figures complained about the remarks made by President Biden and Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., who praised the verdict and called for a broader push for racial justice.

Some of the most shocking remarks came late on Tuesday night during Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s program, where right-wing YouTuber Brandon Tatum made an incoherent case for a sinister conspiracy, suggesting that the media aims to have Black people confront police in order to be shot in exchange for a large payoff.

AS others have written, this is less justice, than accountability. When this kind of decision is the norm, THEN perhaps we can call it justice.

In Greek mythology, Themis was the personification of divine or natural law, order, and justice. Her name means justice. She was worshipped as a goddess in Athens. She was also credited with wisdom, foresight, and prophecy (her son’s name, Prometheus, means “foresight”). She was acquainted with secret mysteries unknown even to Zeus. Themis was a protector of the oppressed and a promoter of hospitality.

Themis was depicted as a beautiful woman, sometimes holding a pair of scales in one hand and a sword or cornucopia in the other. A similar image was used for the Roman goddess Iustitia (Justitia or Lady Justice).

    Justice is blind.

The depiction of Themis or Lady Justice blindfolded is more common in the 16th century and modern times. Blindness represents fairness and impartiality as well as the gift of prophecy. Those who see the future do not experience the present with mundane vision, which distracts from oracular “second sight.”

Themis followed her mother Gaia in occupying the Oracle at Delphi. In some traditions, Themis originated the Oracle. She eventually turned over the Delphic office either to Apollo or her sister, Phoebe.

Themis shared a temple at Rhamnous with Nemesis, because those who ignore divine or natural laws must face comeuppance. Nemesis is the goddess of divine retribution against those who committed hubris (arrogance, excessive pride, and defiance of Olympus) in rejecting law and order.
