I am undecided about this case. I have heard commentary from several police authorities, some saying the shooting was regrettable but understandable under its circumstances, while others say it was absolutely uncalled for. In the meantime, I seek more input and pray for the boy’s family.
Too quick on the draw. Understandable, given the number of guns in the community and police training being to fear everyone as if they are armed. Tragic consequences in a trgic nation that refuses to update its gun laws and address inequality and ingrained racism.
I recall hearing, “If you see something, say something”. Then after somebody shoots people we learn the person had been previously reported as being mentally unstable or owned multiple weapons or expressed crazy beliefs on their favorite social media site or prior violence on police rap sheets, etc.
NOTHING was done to have possibly prevented the person from carrying out his planned killing(s).
They claim to have found the pistol, behind the fence. I hope that it gets checked for fingerprints, by the FBI, not the local police. I hope this happens before the locals destroy any evidence. Gun, or no gun, hands are plainly up, and empty.
At 2:00 a.m. in the morning, why was this 13 yr.old out with a gun? Where was the family guidance, if any? There is much that needs to be said but is ignored! It is easy tocondemn the police…to easy!
This case is much different than the Floyd case and most of the other cases where police were in the wrong. 13 year old Adam Toledo and his friend were out at 2:30 A.M. dressed in gang colors shooting at passing cars. The video shows that Adam had a gun in his hand when he turned to the officer’s command , turning to his right to throw the gun behind a fence, then turning back around to raise his hands to the cop. The question could come in at if the cop saw the gun being thrown away in the dark alley. I don’t think he could have because it was behind the fence. The gun was retrieved, all in the video.
There is no question in my opinion that kneeling on a man’s neck until he dies is murder in the 2nd degree. Or that ‘mistaking’ a firearm for a taser is manslaughter, and the fault of police. Or most all the others that we’ve seen. But I do not think that is the case with Adam Toledo. I think it is regrettable, but it was a justifiable shooting.
After viewing the tape many times, and the findings of reported investigation so far, “justice” might not be what Adam’s mother would like. While calling for justice and fueling protests, real justice looks to me to be charging the mother with several charges of child endangerment or neglect. She reported him missing a little over a week earlier, didn’t report when he showed up at home again, didn’t report when he ran away again, and at 13 years old, is a colors wearing gang member out at 2:30 A.M. shooting at passing cars. I am not in favor of charging her, and I doubt authorities will either. She’s lost a child. But I don’t think it is “justice” to blame the police and fuel protests when her poor parenting is responsible.
Make the cops pay for their own liability insurance. The insurance companies will weed out the rotten ones pretty quick I bet. Maybe let the insurance companies consult on hiring. More stringent psychological profiling would go a long way to eliminating the power hungry, sadistic and otherwise unfit to serve and protect.
So wait, this young man was running around shooting at cars. When confronted by the police, he ran, with a gun clearly in his hands. When the officer caught up to him, he turned towards the officer. The officer had seen the gun in his hand just 0.8 seconds earlier, knew that they had been shooting at cars, and defended himself. When he found out the perp was a kid and had thrown the gun, he felt terrible and did everything he could to save him. He could even be heard crying. So, here is my question, what “justice” are you looking for? Is it against a mother that knew her son was running with gangs, had run away just days before then returned home to no discipline, then was out at 2:30 am shooting at innocent people in cars? Is it against the 21 year old that this young man was running around with, who most likely was teaching him how to shoot at innocent people in cars, and who knows what else he was doing as a 21 year old with a 13 year year old kid. Maybe you think the officer should be charged with murder and never get to go home to his family? Or, maybe you think that no officer should ever defend themselves, and should just allow themselves to be shot and/or killed? By the way, the officer knew the perp had a real gun, as they were shooting cars that were passing by. The officer knew it was loaded. The officer knew the perps had no regard for human life. The officer could only speculate that if, given the chance, the perp would shoot to kill him, but could make that assumption based on the fact that the perps were shooting at innocent occupied cars, so had not regard for other humans.

Adam should have followed instructions and stop running, the police were already responding to shots fired in the area.
