I have no doubt that Manchin is loving his role as, um, necessary. He is a politician after all, and politicians aren’t usually anything like actually important, being mostly about reelection and hot air.
Has Manchin not been paying attention over the last several years? The repubs have no platforms or policies, their only aim is to “own the dems”. They have no intention of cooperating with the democrats, even if it is good for America.
Manchin is just playing hardball politics, which is what any politician at that level would do. When you have leverage, use it. Figure out what you most want out of the situation, and then try to achieve it. It is no different from the role Bernie Sanders and, to a lesser degree, Angus King, is playing. They control which is the majority caucus, so they get powerful committee positions in exchange. King was a Republican governor in Maine and was well-liked and respected there. Had the Repugs NOT run their own candidate against him, he likely would have joined their Senate caucus.
Before everybody lambastes his efforts to keep filibusters and other rules of order, please consider what would happen “if the shoe was on the other foot.” What if an important piece of legislation was on the floor and was being crushed by the other side because members were not available? What if the other side tried to “end run” their legislation when many members were not on the floor and time was needed to get them back? Just because he’s enjoying the bright lights doesn’t mean he’s completely wrong. Be careful of legislation that changes long standing rules. The reason for them might have become a bit obscure but could still be very necessary.
Manchin’s reasoning is faulty – w/o the filibuster, he is the deciding vote; with it, he’s just another conservative politician who thinks doing the right thing for America will get in the way of his re-election.
It’s probably a good thing that Joe Manchin is not as devious (yet?) as Moscow Mitch.. but he is learning fast and if he plays his cards right.. could be sitting on Mitches lap in a few months.
the senate is a screwed up institution and needs reform. . .
but democrats should learn better than to push these massive bills…they are walking into a stereotype trap. . . they should break these bills down into smaller pieces
I think many Democrats don’t want to repeal the filibuster, because then they might actually have to vote NO on things that they’d rather fool their constituents into thinking they approve of. Look at the 7 Democrats, and independent Angus King, who voted against including the minimum wage in Biden’s recovery bill. Removal of the filibuster would be like turning on the light in a kitchen, exposing all the roaches.
Right now, it only takes one front man to retain the filibuster. But if more Democrats get elected, expect the number of those who want to retain the filibuster to magically increase in step.
OK Joey- everybody is looking at you and we’re all impressed at what a big and important little boy you are. Now how about doing a little something for your country rather than your ego?
Manchin is puffed up with his own self importance and delusions of grandeur. He is representing nothing but his own ego, to hell with his state’s (or country’s) position. Unless he wises up, he will end up like that popped balloon eventually, in the trash. Waste of time..He serves no one any good the way he is. DINO for sure! I have zero respect for him or his ilk.
Republicans do what is good for rich folks. What’s good for America is done by Democrats. Consequently, good for American stuff is obviously not good for Republicans because the Democrats will get credit for it. The more they obstruct, the less credit the Democrats get. When that fails, they just take credit for the good stuff they voted against, and their base is so stupid they believe it.
Being a “conservative” Democrat, his show can go either way in 2024. Should Connies get strong, he could, you know, “shift”.. As with AOC, do something for your people AND your country, THEN talk smack, ’kay???
