if Rat is not a hacker, then it’s their fault for not setting a password.

I don’t get to choose my network name anymore. When I moved, my new ISP has decided that the ‘common user’ shouldn’t mess with things, and have locked that option up. Which is why the entire neighbourhood is variants of MySpectrumWiFiXX-000. I just counted 14 of them…

On my last company, where all network traffic was monitored, our design group set up a clandestine wifi network with all Chinese names and passwords. We used it for our personal laptops. Never discovered.

When I was laid off by the HR guy I asked if I could keep the back-up hard drive on the company computer. “Sure, it’s not on the list of things I need.” WOW. Of course I wiped it and now use it for my back-up.

No idea how it happened because I always change our password from the default to one of my choosing, but somehow one of our neighbors managed to connect to our wi-fi (pretty sure my daughter gave the password to her friend so she could use her phone at our house and that friend then told someone else). When I discovered some devices that I didn’t recognize on our network, I changed the network name to Not Your Effin’ Network and obviously changed the password.

Looking back on it, I kind of wish I had set parental controls on those unknown devices to make them lock at the same time every day. Oh well.

What interesting about this is that Xfinity encourages all their users to create a network (called “xfinity”) on their routers to extend the public wifi network. I’ve left it on mine as the security of the other networks should be adequate (and have been so far) to prevent issues.

My neighborhood has a few people who believe in the insane conspiracies put forth by the previous administration. I changed the name of my Wifi network to “FBI Surveillance Van #7” and it wasn’t long before a couple of them were outside looking up and down the street.

Most modern access points (and wifi routers) have a facility to have an allow list. You set it up using the MAC address of the device you want to allow into your network, and any other device can’t connect. That, plus strong password plus not broadcasting your SSID plus going on the 5GHZ band will give you great security.
