the movie and play have been banned in thailand. they play very fast and loose with the facts. that particular king lived to a ripe old age, for example. i still love it though. all their songs are fantastic up to the chinatown one, which was awful.
I never knew Deborah Kerr was dubbed! Although it did have its own stupid moments, in a pick between the two I’d go with the 1956 version, it seemed less icky and the romance aspect was played down more. Plus I liked the song Yul Brynner sang.
He looked more like Rex Harrison, who played him in the 1940s non-musical “Anna abd the King”. Harrison was mighty flattered till he saw a photo of the original King.
“Something Wonderful” is actually my favorite song from that, since she could be singing about me. Followed by “Is a Puzzlement”.
