This would be a moot point if the USA had a NationalIDCard issued to every U.S. citizen and legal resident thereof!! I will now wait for the jocularity to begin…
Before voter ID laws are enacted, the state should first CAREFULLY plan and enact a FAIR AND JUST method of ensuring that EVERYONE has easy access to getting approved IDs, with assistance from the state where required. If necessary, the state should provide transportation for anyone who has any restriction in mobility. Of course, that would be Fair and Just for all, which is not the goal of the republican party.
This analogy is lazy and irrelevant: fishing and fishing licenses are voluntary, unlike making mandatory IDs that are difficult to obtain for many disadvantaged citizens who want to be able vote to determine their country’s future, as is their Constitutional right.
Here’s the response: Because a fishing license is a privilege, which holds you responsible for your actions when fishing. Voting is a right, although you’re still responsible for any actions when voting.
Several things… First, there is no systematic voter fraud occurring, and Republicans know this because they are the ones that keep studying this alleged problem and finding no problem. Second, Republicans are the party that doesn’t like passing unnecessary laws, claiming there are too many rules and regulations already. So why are they all hell-bent on putting new voting rules and regulations in place? And third, since there’s no voter fraud going down, why not make it make it easier for all to vote, as it is in other countries? (Watch link – you won’t believe it!) I think y’all know the answers to all of these questions… https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/02/opinion/elections-foreign-voter-reaction.html?smid=fb-share&fbclid=IwAR0rd6coOwVWlkrcv08jQIzVuY2IggWArKMc4h7KcEnAWBdhRjOxJzRBm8c
Fine. I’ll give you your voter ID, but now make it easier for minorities to get the proper ID, expand the number of polling places, increase voting hours, make it easier to register to vote… We know the real purpose behind these laws and it has nothing to do with election integrity.
driver’s license or state ID doesn’t make any difference get them at the DMV and you register to vote at the same time,if you got your card you’re good to go
If getting an acceptable voter ID was as straightforward as getting a fishing license, then there would be less push-back. And if the voter ID would remain accepted for its whole duration, instead of suddenly getting declared “no longer valid”… followed by a run-around about getting an acceptable replacement… then there would be less push-back.
What state requires you to show ID to get a fishing license, and why? My state doesn’t require ID for a fishing license — there’s no reason for it. You don’t have to be a resident to fish here; the only reason for the license is to control catch limits.
No intelligent person would argue that requiring an eligible voter to show they are that eligible voter is somehow undemocratic or unfair, and only the less educated still believe that an ID requirement has any meaningful effect on turnout [https://www.nber.org/papers/w25522]. However, eliminating polling places or severely restricting voting hours can affect election turnout. Even so, the probable net effect of the GOP attempts to restrict minority voting will be a backlash that increases minority turnout and results in fewer GOP candidates being elected.
They need to make sure that a) you are who you says you are, because b) they need to make sure you don’t have any prior restrictions for illegal fishing violations, and c) to confirm that you are a state resident (often has a lower fee).
To me, the Voter ID for voting functions in a couple of ways to aid in voter oppression. First, it allows for a foot in the door for more requirements. Once a law is on the books it can be interpreted in ways which could lead (and probably would, in Republican controlled states) to more requirements for identification. Second, it allows for arguments that the ID is not valid, due to signature mismatches (particularly for those who have modified their signature over time), incorrect information due to computer or human error, along with other problems that one could imagine (and a Republican lawmaker certainly can imagine ways to stop people from voting).
Aside from those points, the ID requirement is disingenuous. According to numerous studies, there is little to no voter fraud, so the ID is an unnecessary obstacle to a problem that does not exist (for those civil libertarians out there). From a fiscal standpoint, it is economically wasteful (for those conservatives out there). The goal should be (in a democracy) to encourage voting (for those Americans out there).
If the Republicans offer any plan, check for the glass shards. They have proven themselves to be anti-democratic. I think it can be accepted as a truism that any plan offered by the modern Republican party is suspect.
The voter ID laws serve the same purpose as marijuana laws. Both are pushed as a necessary way to combat what is actually a NON issue. but like marijuana laws they can be enforced selectively to get the desired effect… the weed laws selectively enforced result in more minorities in prison… the voter ID laws will result in less minorities voting. Sad part is the expanded voter ID laws are the least malicious provisions in these dubious bills.

Racist Republicans want to disenfranchise minority voters. Making it illegal to offer water to someone waiting in line to vote is a dead giveaway.

Not everyone gets a fishing license. I’d bet most if not all homeless people don’t have fishing licenses.
