Glad to see the CEO’s of Coca Cola and Delta Airlines saying all the right things, though it is troubling that Georgia Governor Brian Kemp states that they were involved in the meetings that produced the Georgia Voter Suppression Law and did not express those views BEFORE the law was written, passed and signed into law.
At least now they are saying the right words.
But we need more than words.
Watch what they DO, not what they SAY.
Words are cheap. Time for ACTION. They have real clout. They are among the biggest donors to Republican candidates. Time to use that influence to get REAL CHANGE, including pushing senate Republicans to pass HR1 (For the People Act) and HR4 (John Lewis Civil Rights Act) and have a single nationwide voter protection standard.
As I said before… there needs to be several THOUSAND people out across Georgia during the next election handing out food and water to voters waiting in line. If the police say that it’s illegal, DEMAND to be arrested, and DEMAND a separate full jury trial for each arrestee within 60 days. Refuse to be bailed out, demand to stay in jail the full time until your trial. Let’s see what THOSE expenses do to the State Budget, and what that backlog of trials do to the State’s Court System.
Delta was on the wrong side of this bill and only changed their public position when consumer backlash occurred. Where do they really stand? I’m pretty sure I know.
The solution to the problem is that they need to increase the polling places where the lines are so long that voters have needs of food and water. It’s the wait time that is unreasonable. The repugnant repubs decreased the polling places so that wait time has become an issue. That was purposeful voter suppression.
Now if Coca-Cola parked semis, filled with whatever bottled water they sell, at polling places, and Home Depot showed up with a bunch of Port -A-Potties….
Does the law prohibit anyone from SELLING food and water or giving out money?? Have someone go up the line handing out pennies and then have the food/water vendor come behind to sell their wares for a few cents.
The real power to force Georgia to revoke the voter suppression laws may lie in sports. How about every black player in Pro football, baseball and basketball states that they will not play a game in Georgia? I’m a Georgia Tech alumnus; how about every black player in the NCAA (including the Tech players) say they won’t play in Georgia? It shouldn’t be only black players; How about pro golfers threaten a boycott of the Masters?
Sigh. Montana Swill is at its usual dishonesty, once again, yet again. The “no food or water” law is in ADDITION to PLANNED voter suppression, where voters in minority precincts (not all of whom vote Democratic, by the way) are forced to stand in line for hours simply because there are so few polling places for them—again, by design. And as for the efficacy of sports boycotts in reaction to contemptible laws, you might want to ask Mike Pence about that. He didn’t wise up, of course (he isn’t capable of wisdom), but he DID make changes because of actual or threatened boycotts.
I need to check the actual wording of the law. Does it really say “no food or water”, with nothing else forbidden? Does that mean that it would be OK to give them Coca Cola? Hmm.

When leaders fail, the rest of us need to step up, just like we did between 2016 and 2020.

That would be a great idea if only Delta had the nalgas to do it.

The Georgia House just passed a bill to eliminate Delta’s tax breaks for jet fuel.

too little, too late. If corporations in Georgia spoke up earlier, this bill may never have been passed. It’s a cart and pony show after the fact.

None of this would be happening if the SCOTUS hadn’t, in it’s far-right, conservative wisdom, gutted the Voting Rights Act.

Will people be charged if they are handing out water to Republican voters? Just asking.

If I hand my grandmother, who has been standing in line for hours to vote, a bottle of water, I’m in trouble?

If they did this in GA they would be committing a Felony. That would make them ineligible to Vote.

Electioneering (look it up) is illegal is nearly every other state. Especially in Republican stronghold states of New York and Illinois.
