The Mars probes have been in planning for a decade or more, and in transit for quite some time: This was the “easy” window of opportunity for the trip. Nobody could possibly have known about Covid-19 when these probes were sent, and regardless of Covid-19, once they arrive, the science has to be done when it’s available.
Maybe we didn’t know about Covid 19 when the missions to Mars were being planned, but we certainly were aware of global poverty, hunger, wars leading to 79.5 million people being refugees, inequality. I still say we ought to look at fixing this planet’s problems before we look to other planets to exploit.
Going to Mars as with going to the Moon, will provide many benifits yet to be defined. The payback from space exploration has more then justified its cost.
