I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly, the rebel base was on the fourth moon of the planet Yavin, and the Death Star had to maneuver around the planet to get a clean shot. As soon as they had “cleared the planet,” Grand Moff Tarkin gave the order to fire.

The Death Star had to get around Yavin first. It can blow up a terrestrial-size moon but not a gas giant.
Also, Ewoks are surprisingly skilled dress makers.
