Gas station sushi is always a hard no, except in Japan, where they really know how to do convenience stores right.

Warm blankets! Warm coffee! Pucky’s little hard hat! And now everyone’s happy.

Provided the People kept the fridge closed, they probably didn’t lose much. Fish likes to go bad if you look at it wrong, though. And Primus forbid they had popsicles in the freezer – we had a less-than-one-day blackout, and the sticky, sugary MESS those left behind! Everything else was fine, though some was covered in popsicle goo.

My most horrifying moment of opening a freezer after a power outage was years ago. I had been gone for two weeks, and someone had gotten into the fuse box and cut the power to the fridge and freezer. All the meat was rotting, and uncooked yeast rolls had broken out of their bags and grew into the meat. It was spread like tentacles through the whole freezer. Shudder.

I ordered sushi from Whole Foods today, what got delivered was 2 SPICY hand rolls that had soggy nori wrappings. Sigh…

As others have commented, gas station sushi is probably a hard no, even in the gas station. Left over and questionably refrigerated? Don’t even think about it. Into a sealed baggie and into the garbage can.

All sushi is a hard “No”!

Sushi is a trick the Japanese play on gullible Westerners, making them believe that a bit of raw fish on a blob of cold rice is an expression of Japanese aesthetic sensitivity, full of mono no aware, wabi and sabi (and a blob of wasabi) and Zen spirituality and such.

It’s just raw fish (or even nastier sea life) on cold rice.

Ugh, gas station sushi sounds like a good way to get really sick. Believe it or not, a place that does sushi fairly well and at a reasonable price (at least according to my wife it is good but not great) is Publix if it has a sushi chef on staff back in the seafood department. My wife also tried some at another older Publix which did not have the chef on staff (it was likely brought in from the warehouse in nearby Lakeland) and she could tell the difference, not as bad as gas station sushi but as good as the fresh product either. Myself, I stick to the Publix subs, and any of their deli chicken products (fried, rotisserie, etc) as they are all really good, much better than Winn Dixie or Walmart as well as many fast food chains who sell the same stuff.

    Food on ice

    A ticket to paradise but

Some can’t stay here any more

Temp got too high and so

Puck went from shelf to shelf & drawer

Any bad sushi, he’d have found it

He’s mad skilled, no two ways around it

Light of the fridge, shine on him

    Puck has the answers

Shine on his hat, sweet Pucky

    He takes no chances

Don’t unload freezer immediately! Start it back and led food refreeze. Much less smell and/or oozing that way. Fridge? YOYO.

Most power companies will NOT reimburse you for spoiled food due to an outage. However, for very little money you can add this coverage to your homeowners or renters insurance. Especially good to have if you live in hurricane prone areas like I do.

Gas station sushi is no match for Gas station chicken! Although the fact that you can either eat it right there or chuck it out the windshield both remain constants in the universe.

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Queen Catshepsut the Golden: Burt-Ra, do you have a report on the latest repairs?

Burt-Ra: The salt lamps have all been restored, and the Royal Procurers have found a new source of ice. (But they aren’t saying where).

The Queen: Very good. And thank you, Sophititi and Maat-Tilda for creating your beautiful artwork and needlework. Elvis-Anum, do you have a report on Tillie’s latest rug creation?

    Elvis-Anum: Zzzzzzzz…

The Queen: I’ll take that as a favorable report. Now, Beatrixia, and Puckmosis, find out from Thomios what he needs for the royal pantry.

    At the Royal Kitchen

Puckmosis: Hi, Thomios, is there anything you need for the royal pantry.

Thomios: Usually whatever I need just happens to be right here. But I could do with some more Nommy Nom Spider treats.

Beatrixia: Great. I’ll find out from Arachna when the next locust plague is scheduled and have the spiders make some more treats.

    Thomios: Good ’nuf.

Now I have to wipe coffee off my monitor… didn’t see that gas station sushi joke coming. hahaha! (I’m not a fan of most seafood I avoid it for the most part – but Japanese sushi made not for a mass market can be pretty tasty. My employers Cafeteria had Sushi on Tuesdays for lunch. The visiting sushi chef(s) and helpers? brought all there stuff and would take over a “station” – the line was usually 10 people deep for several hours. I think they stopped serving when they ran out of the ingredients. I know I got there late and they were “making” up plates with what they had. It was pricey but totally worth it. If you got there early there was sashimi. I tended towards the nori maki and onigiri (wrapped rice always in cute little shapes or themes) for the variety and “ease of eating”.

Love the two little “gas station sushi” rolls on a ‘platter’ on the door of the fridge. Definitely just nope! no! no way! or perhaps a midwestern “Yeah, no.”

While I love sushi, I refuse to eat any that I haven’t seen being prepared. For any leftovers, we have a one-day rule: It is eaten the next day or it goes into the compost bin. (Where the raccoons will probably eat it that night.)

Gas station sushi is automatically a no…. unless in Japan. Might actually be good in Japan where it might be made fresh. But here it’s terrible from the get go.

One of the ways you can attempt to save frozen things when the power fails is dry ice. After my last frantic trips to find and buy enough dry ice to save our two freezers full of meat, we invested in a natural gas powered generator.

I don’t even put eggs in the fridge anymore. I keep them in an egg basket on the kitchen table. They don’t go bad. Something about Aussie eggs, I guess

Someday I am going to have chooks, so I can have fresh eggs too! Hubs loves chicken so much that he’s told me no for years. Just a few months ago, he told me I’d already won that one though.. LOL! Now to get it sorted…
