Trump says that “No one could have seen this coming” referring to the pandemic. Well, someone did.In December 2014, Obama warned the United States:“There may and likely will come a time in which we have both an airborne disease that is deadly,”. And in order to deal with that, they sat up a White House Pandemic response team, which had clinics worldwide, including 44 people in the area of China where Covid 19 originated. The plan was for them to spot the disease and then to send enough people to track it and confine it to the area of origin. They managed the Ebola outbreak with only one American death.
To help the incoming administration be better prepared to fight future pandemics, officials under President Obama prepared a 69-page playbook, written by Obama’s National Security Council, which detailed strategies for responding to a potential pandemic. Outgoing Obama administration officials briefed Trump’s top aides on the potential dangers of a pandemic. But the Trump administration ignored the playbook Instead, spending weeks downplaying the virus, which they knew about in late December 2019, spouting rampant misinformation and contradicting their own medical and scientific advisors. They wasted nearly two months needed to bolster the federal stockpile of critically needed supplies and equipment. By then, it was too late. Trump likes to name things after himself. This one, he truly earned— The Trump Plague.
There are three (3) confirmed Covid-19 variants which have developed in the a bit more than 12 months since the first strain was identified. The current crop of vaccines were all formulated to counteract that initial virus.
The good news: the epidemiologists/scientists who develop vaccines are confident the initial vaccine can be swiftly — within months — modified to successfully attack the virus variants (the mutations, the evolved — and evolving — virus).
The bad news: the new variants are more infectious (so far, it appears they do not cause higher death rates or greater severity of disease — SO FAR); there is no guarantee that there will not be even more variants which develop, each resulting in the need to develop/test/revise/deploy — requiring weeks/months; the amount of time necessary to achieve the degree of herd immunity in any nation which changes SARS-CoV-2 from an existential pandemic to a less dangerous — yet likely permanent — perhaps only seasonal disease risk, like SARS flu, is linked to the amount of time deployment of vaccine to each continent is necessary for herd immunity to be achieved.
This all depends on whether vaccine deployment to poverty nations ever occurs, and whether anti-vaccination groups in more economically advantaged nations do not remain so large that 70+% vaccinated is never achieved.
Bottom line: kids in schools can readily become asymptomatic vectors who bring Covid home to the breadwinners/grams & gramps/neighbors …
Don’t forget that he targeted blue states with denied funds and critical supplies to punish them and to make it appear they were to blame. Another words an abuse of power for political gain.
Can you find anything else to blame Trump for? it has been snowing and bitterly cold in much of the country, surely he caused that too. Perhaps the multi-car pile-ups on icy roads could be blamed on him. Oh, and gas has gone up by almost 15% in our area. Clearly that was Trump.
Biden is a ventriloquist dummy at best. He has the spine of a jellyfish and the brains to match. The only schools that are not successfully open are those in urban areas dominated by left-leaning unions. One day a week is just weak.BTW – yes I know a bit about schools. Recently retired from after 40 years. I quit the union when it became obvious it was more about politics than about education. Our schools are open and the problems have been very minor.

It’s the Trump plague, not China.

I am hoping for half days at this point. It’s still better than the “wave of death wash over the country” man.

Bingo! The parents care more about free babysitting than their kids actually learning anything…

The actual quote was “at least one day.” When did we get to the point where bare minimums were interpreted as expectations?
