Has an American taken over writing Fred – no self-respecting Brit will ever call what the twins are doing football. Soccer is football to the British (and everyone else except the Americans)
The Brit friends, including my daughter’s English soccer coach say they never use Soccer while in England even though it started as Association Football. Football is a term that is clearly understood there. They use the term Soccer (the derivative of Association Football) here in the US so as to not confuse the locals.

It hardly ranks among the top ten of true sport although devotees thereof with their scarves, ties and floppy caps seem to think it the best way to idle away an afternoon, beer in hand. Basketball, follows a close second with its ridiculously tall men and women in their ridiculously short costumes, tossing a round ball about on a polished wood floor. Back in the 1950s, when I was a teenager, American football was referred to as ’war on a Sunday afternoon."
