Why is Dad complaining? He always said that Calvin needs to build character. Well, now he’s building one.

An artist or visionary is never appreciated in their own time.

What is that Calvin is being forced to eat anyhow? It looks like something really nasty, like pureed Brussel sprouts (man those things used to make me want to hurl as a kid) blended in with some potato and peas to make it a solid mass.

The dichotomy between Calvin’s parents and Wallace’s parents is remarkable. Both kids live in a highly creative and fearless world of their own making. Calvin’s parents seem often to be exasperated by it. Wallace’s parents encourage and celebrate it.

On Thursday, someone made a comment about Shakespeare’s Hamlet being “fake news” and I commented that it was based on a legend among Danes living in Anglo-Saxon England. I was later informed by another commentator that the legend originated in Jutland.

My source had been a book about the King Arthur legends which stated that Arthur’s maternal grandfather is sometimes known as Amlawd and that this may be an early version of Hamlet as the Hamlet legend was growing among the Danes in England as the King Arthur legend was growing among the Welsh. Presumably, the Hamlet legend began in Jutland and was brought to Britain by the Jutes who preceded the Angles and Saxons. The Saxons would be King Arthur’s main enemies and the area ruled by Jutish, Anglo and Saxon kings would become England.

I like the idea of King Arthur being a grandson of Hamlet but it is more likely that Amlawd comes from Emir Lyddaw referring to the area of Lyddaw which included Brittany and was later ruled by Arthur’s cousin King March or Mark. Arthur would have inherited his kingdom from his father Uthyr Pendragon and March would have inherited Lyddaw from his grandfather who was Emir of Lyddaw.

Someone also commented that MacBeth was fake news and that it was “probably written to please the English queen.” MacBeth was actually written by Shakespeare to please her Scottish successor King James VI of Scotland, I of England. After Elizabeth I died an elderly virgin, her Scottish cousin James ruled over Scotland and England. King James would have been pleased with the play MacBeth as it demonised the historical MacBeth and glorified Banquo, a rival claimant to the throne of Scotland. It also played upon King James’s fear of witches.

Hey, that’s a pretty good sculpture! Lettuce for hair and garbanzo beans for teeth.

I had Calvin’s take on Spam. I fell asleep at the table because I was forced to eat it and didn’t.

When I went to high school, I sat with a kid in the cafe who would make things with his food, especially if we had mashed potatoes that day. Don’t think he ever ate any of it.

Well, now it’s art. You can’t eat it.

Sympathy for Calvin, I used to put ketchup on my mashed potatoes, so I could choke them down.

And we wonder where our creativity got squashed…..

Back when I was a kid my mom would make a dinner treat for me. Fried ground beef, mashed potatoes and canned creamed corn. I would mix mine up and sculpt all sorts of thing and eat the whole mess cold. when the fat in the GB congealed you could get some serious height. NEVER got yelled at for that.

Love it when Calvin mimics the face of his work of art in the tenth panel, and how in the eleventh the “hair” reacts to the Dad’s yelling!

It looks like unbaked spinach souffle. It really does taste good, but you MUST bake it.

HAHA! O come on, Dad, it’s funny and creative. Calvin’s parents really don’t seem to ever enjoy or praise him ever. Sure, he’s at the dinner table, but give him a bone once in a while, sheesh! :D

My guess is that it didn’t start out like that, probably Calvin mixed up peas and mashed potatoes or something.

I think we were served something similar on Thursday’s in elementary and middle school….

Parents often fail to see or appreciate their child’s artistic talents.

Remember the horrible trend in the 60’s of making jello in molds with vegetables and stuff inside? Completely disgusting.
