Once on a German train in Stuttgart a nice lady with a cart served a hot lunch and beer. Train arrival and departure timed to the minute. As an America the person in the seat next to me felt compelled to tell me, “This is the area where you guys bombed the crap out of us.” We then had a few more beers…

I remember the last time I was served an actual meal on a flight. 2002, I think it was.

Back in the days when they did serve meals they would often ask, “Chicken or Beef?” My response was, “Give me one and let me guess.”

I met one elderly German man on a walk on a visit back in the 1980s who regaled me with " I was guest of Montgomery in England during the war" to which I replied “funny my Uncle was a guest of yours in the war too.”

When I first started into the working world – early 90’s we could at least still travel Business class for international travel and they still served something to eat for local regular class flights. In the nearly 30 years since then … it certainly hasn’t gotten better, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any cheaper.

In the USSR Aeroflot had a rule that meals would be served on all flights lasting more than 6 hours. The SST flight from Moscow to Vladivostok was originally more than 6 hours. After 1 week the flight was changed terminate in Alma Ata with a layover of thirty minutes and then a new flight would continue on to Vladivostok. The practice soon spread to the rest the Aeroflot domestic system.
