The numbers were pretty clear. To get to herd immunity WITHOUT a vaccine you either have to permanently modify pretty much everyone’s behavior (fat chance of that!) or you have to get to something like (low-balling) 65% who have recovered from the infection. There are 330 million in the US, so about 215 million people have to be infected. The death rate once you’re infected is (lets just low-ball this too) 0.8%, so 1,720,000 people will have to die to get there without the vaccine. That would be 1.4 million more deaths. The number we’ve already seen, plus FOUR times that number (more or less).

And that’s the (approximate) truth.

The truth is, there may be no such thing as herd immunity for Covid19.

This is really sick, Trump spread covid, not Fauci. Right wingers deny that deadly disease spreading Trump stalled every effort to fight covid.

Fauci did not agree with herd immunity, that came out of Fox ‘news’, how many Americans have they murdered with their lies?

I am very grateful for all those who have worn masks, avoided large gatherings, and kept social distance. They have prevented many more deaths than we have had.

Uh, there’s a huge disconnect between the common conception of “herd immunity” and the scientific method for determining it. Importantly, IT IS A PURELY THEORETICAL CONSTRUCT!!!!!!

That is, it has roots in statistics and probability theory based on assumptions of the contagious properties of the disease in question. It has never been calculated and then actually tested in reality. It’s a hypothesis, in other words, without ever having been tested. And establishing the null hypothesis and designing a real experiment would be highly unethical and lethal to millions.

“Herd immunity” is simply a calculated point (or, more properly, an assessment of the probability) in every communicable disease progression where enough people have had it so that it dies out for lack of new hosts. But this is a purely theoretical construct. There are no good data on what ANY given level of " herd immunity" might actually be for this or any other contagion. We just don’t know at what point (I.e. how many infections it would take) the idea might become real. It hasn’t happened ever in a way we have studied with any rigor.

So not only is Fox lying about this. They literally have no basis whatsoever for a belief in the accuracy or adequacy of the hypothesis in trying to stop a contagion by relying on “herd immunity.”

It’s all pure speculation. The real news is that mRNA vaccines have been developed for the first time ever. This is a MAJOR development in applied science, based on hard work, collaboration among thousands of scientists and clinical researchers, all following the facts. That’s not fake or made up.

Fauci has been all over the board regarding the CCP Wuhan virus. In January 2020 he said it was no big thing and would burn out in a few months. When Trump shut down travel from China both he and Democrats said that was an overreaction. He said masks were useless for the general population then a month later he mandated masks for everyone. When the virus really started to have an impact last Spring and the medical community began to talk about “herd immunity “, Fauci there was no such thing. Of course now he is all about “herd immunity “. Fauchi said it was impossible to get a vaccine by the end of 2020 and producing one would be in the summer of 2021 at the earliest and most probably two to five years. When President Trump overruled Fauci he was criticized for not listening to him. When President Trump followed Fauci’s recommendations he was criticized by the Dems and MSM but Fauci was never mentioned. The left wing posters here may as well be following China’s talking points and many of them probably are.

Bok may have achieved peak irony, since this ‘toon is as fine an example of herd mentality as we’re likely to see this year.

Infecting everybody to achieve herd immunity would only have caused a couple of million deaths and millions more lifetime health issues. This all from the pro-life party.
