It really depends on what ELSE is going on. I used to think that a divided government was a good thing because it prevented them from doing things (and I figured most things they would want to do would be bad or stupid). But then we get into something like the pandemic when it WOULD have been a great thing to have a president (at all) and both houses who could work together to cope.
The best leadership is always the one that you forget is there because of the tranquility, safety and needs being met.
The worst people in charge allow a crisis to be created and then try to convince the fearful that they will be the hero needed to save everyone. Sometimes it’s too late or not possible to be done by that “leadership”.
If there is time, someone else is put in charge but there is a lot of damage that has to be repaired and corrective action to be taken…if there is time.
This is not entirely accurate. Dems have reached across the aisle repeatedly in efforts to compromise. But the Republican “compromise” is, “Do it my way, or no deal.”
It was no accident that there was no mention of parties in the Declaration of Independence or in the Constitution.
With our historically low voter turnout and close election results, a winner-take-all system is probably the very best way to arrive at full dysfunction as so many go unrepresented. Each of the so-called “major” parties represents only about 30% of the electorate. Covid-19 has probably caused the best voter representation in years/decades. I believe there should be a disincentive for non-participation in the election process. Our common goal must be ranked-choice/single-transfer elections to disempower parties and empower We The People. I believe that every voter must have proof that they passed the same citizenship test [part of high school graduation requirements?] that immigrants must pass to earn their right to vote as citizens.
Republicans fight against the human revolution. They roll back all of our rights. They don’t want the USA to progress, they think you should be their slave.
If we all woke up tomorrow morning and had no political parties or memory of their existence, it would be about ten AM when someone came up with a plan for making the world better ( according to their definition of better). By noon, they would have decided that they could do nothing on their own, but maybe they could get some other like minded people to help out and convince other people to want to make the world better too. By the next day, they would be organizing meetings to recruit assistance. By the election cycle, they would have picked out a name so they could identify the group they have formed, come up with positions on other matters that were important to other members of the group, and taken steps to keep the group together after the current world improvement is achieved. If it would make you feel better, we could call them committees, or kumquats, or whatever makes you happy, but political parties are human nature.

Here (again) are some of the founder’s thoughts on political parties and division.
