What’s really annoying is when they let the kids choose their own teams and you always get chosen last! (One one occasion both teams insisted that the other one take me—now that’s just mean. They were drunk with power…)

How like Phelps, to make exercise about looking your best, instead of health or something trivial like that.

In my high school the kids who signed up for band could forego PE class and a lot of my friends went for that option as they hated gym class. I did not like gym class either with all the bullying and forcing you to play sports that you absolutely sucked at. If you joined ROTC you could also avoid PE and the third option but for only one semester a year was if you were on the cross country, swimming, volleyball or tennis teams as they were arranged where your PE class could count as your team practice in the final period of the day though the school board forced you to do other sports besides the one you were trying to get better at at least once a week (makes reverse logic sense if you knew who was on the Hillsborough County school board in the early ’80s). So I was on the swim team but we also had to do some track and field, volleyball and other sports that most of us did not care for. he more popular sports such as football, basketball and baseball were excluded from this but most of the athletes on these teams tended to like gym class anyhow so they simply practiced after school. Also in the early ’80s we only had to do 2 years of PE, not 4.

My junior high PE teacher was an Army vet. She treated us like a bunch of raw recruits until she forced us to go outside one cold, windy day while we were wearing only our thin cotton short PE outfits while she was bundled in wool. Most of us got sick from it. She got fired.

From grade school to 12th grade, I was subjected to PE. As for building up character, it also broke down character. Dodgeball was experienced, every year. I’m fairly certain many of my fellow students got a taste of anxiety and depression, from those sessions. We also for some reason in High school, were taught to square dance and disco dance(,yes, back when Saturday Night Fever, was in theatres).
