In 1917, the Soviet Union pulled out of World War I. The German Army rushed all of its troops on the Eastern Front to the west in literally a last ditch effort to win the war before American troops could arrive.
The German military did their best, but in spite of gaining some territory, they could not break the Allied front. Exhausted and out of reserves, they decided quit while they were ahead. The option was total collapse and invasion of the German homeland.
On the home front in Germany, people were starving and the economy collapsing.
Yet, when you looked at a map of Europe on November 11, 1918, the Germans still held most of Belgium and large parts of France.
This led to the “Stab in the Back” conspiracy theory that Hitler used as the tinder to ignite his National Socialism.
Trump lost and he knows he’s lost. He’s not as smart as the German military in that he does not know when to cut his losses. However he is putting aside his tinder: the conspiracy theory of the “Rigged Election” which he hopes he can use to ignite his next bid for dictatorship in 2024.
I am not concerned about Trump. Given his current state of health and his lifestyle, I doubt he will live until 2024. What concerns me is what future wannabe GOP dictator will find this tinder and set a match to it. Whoever that person is will undoubtedly be more competent than Trump.
A side note to the “Stab in the Back” conspiracy theory. When the armistice was announced, most units stood down in a defensive posture waiting for it to take effect. Some units kept fighting literally to the 11th hour. Gen. Pershing ordered his men to keep fighting. He stated, “Until our troops are marching down the main street in Berlin, Germany will not believe that it had lost the war.” Indeed, German troops did return to “victory parades.”
I think it is worth fighting to the 11th hour to debunk the “Rigged Election" conspiracy theory.
