I almost suspect that shows meant for little girls do the same to boys. If I had a big enough frame of reference. I wonder if that means I’m falling into the same stereotype I just described.

Phoebe’s mom should look into doing video reviews online. She could even have some Ft. Marigold:-).

She may not have aged well because she didn’t age at ALL?

I know what she means. It stinks. Thank goodness most programs don’t have females clutching their pearls or swooning. Puke!

She’s probably watching Test Card F.

Modern day Hollywood is dyslexic. They do something stupid, interestingly.

Hey, at least is not like now where every female main character has the personality of Mabel Pines.

I’ve watched television ever since Sid Caesar, Imogen Coca & “Your Show of Shows”. Only about 1% of TV programs have had ANY MERIT WHATSOEVER. That’s why 99% of television fare is appropriately called “teletrash.” Phoebe’s mother is right to criticize; however, she’s wrong to watch. She’d be wiser and happier if she bided her time for the 99% teletrash to crash and burn and then stream the remains a few years later. She could devote the time she saved to worthy pursuits. As it is, she pisses time away on the sofa out of lazy habit or absurd duty in a sort of victory of hope over experience. Teletrash’s 99% is written to and for six-year-old IQs, regardless of their chronological age. Their minds are already stunted. Why VOLUNTEER to get a virtual lobotomy? As the man said, “I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.”

Phoebe’s mother and I have something in common then—I can totally see myself doing this same thing. :P

Kinda like how Franklin from “Peanuts” didn’t age well because his skin tone was the only notable thing about him.

When you said “not aged well” I thought maybe the movie was full of Pogs nd Whaaaaaaaaz Uuuuuuuuup? , slap bracelets, crazy hair styles , over sized cell phones, Down with OPP, rainbow striped coats , Game Boys, rabbit ears . casual smoking nd bosses slapping secretaries on the but nd calling them baby doll.

This comic feels autobiographic for Dana. I could see her doing this.

I’m a 90’s kid and I cannot recall a show that was like this, sure the majority of the shows I ACTUALLY remember (laughing at myself) growing up with, the main characters were often boys, but there were many girls with names, personalities, and such. Some examples Dorthy Anne from Magic Schoolbus, Pepper Ann, Francine from Arthur, etc.

Much more recently (around 3-4 years ago) I became a fan of a show that was designed around the idea of breaking the trend of girls being just sugar and tea-parties spearheaded by the brains behind shows like Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends Lauren Faust called My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. Lauren wanted to seriously bring to the table the idea that there were many ways of “being a girl”. A girl can be smart, funny, serious, artistic, athletic, shy just like boys can. I think that what drew me to the show was the fun stories and the fact that there was a whole world to explore not just “the neighborhood” or “the school”. The well-made animation helped too, as did the discovery of the hugely diverse range of fan content from adorable fluff stories to deeply emotional animation to amazing works of art.
