Ahh, so the world would’ve passed me by if I hadn’t dissected a frog bathed in alcohol? Phew! Dodged that bullet.

Truthfully, if you don’t have an education the world will not pass you by.

It will walk right over you.

I felt the same about geometry…I use it all the time now. Thank you for that!

To be really with Latin and Greek, try pronouncing those words in the classic. Few English speakers can, especially “y”, the French “u” or the German “ue”. (Snark!)

Took 4 years of Latin in high school. What a waste of time that was.

I took a college course in etymology. The text was Word Origins from Latin and Greek. One of the more interesting courses I had, and I use that knowledge still.

Nowadays, a liberal arts education is only good for playing Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit.

That is why there are two water fountains. One is old-fashioned with a sign that says “DROPOUTS”. The other is a state-of-the-art refrigerated water cooler with a sign that says “GRADUATES”. Which one do you want to drink from?

Education is not the be-all and end-all of life. As one prison warden put it: “I have enough PhDs behind bars here that I could make this place an accredited university.”

Succinct and enlightened

I can barely stand to clean a fish. Dissecting a frog was too much for me.

Yet life continues to pass by.Last year I tried my best to slow life down, did not work, I started health insurance which was best before and yes Medicare did catch me. Life kept going.

I don’t know…Lynn is making this woman into an impossibly perfect Super Teacher with all the right answers and comebacks. But the strip has been syrupy before and I survived it. Gagged a bit, tho.

It isn’t so much about what you specifically study but more about teaching a person how to learn and support themselves. Setting goals and knowing how to achieve.

Not only will it pass you by, it will leave you bruised and broken in the ditch.

Well done, but now with the pandemic there ARE people for whom the world is coming to an end because they (or some in power) can not reliably respect most experts in the relevant fields, then assess health information and act upon it in an informed fashion.

Too bad society is probably going to get stuck carrying your sorry arse along.

I’ve often said to people who ask me about whether we NEED to know how to do something (typically a STEM sort of topic) in real life – this even happens at work, oddly enough. I generally respond that, no – you don’t need math or science or whatever to just get through. The world has gotten easy enough. However, you don’t get the most out of and don’t understand the things around you without knowing those things.

The schools waste a lot of time teaching things students will never need or use. Too bad they don’t use some of that time to teach kids how to do taxes, rent an apartment, invest, do banking and a thousand other things kids don’t know until they are out on their own.

This is a huge waste of time for anyone who is going to be a plumber, auto mechanic, electrician or A/C technician. Those are all vital careers and a good fit for many students.

The less education you have, the easier it is for others to take advantage of you.

Good point. I know that shut him down and gave him something to think about. And she was very professional. She didn’t embarrass him in front of the class which is what a lot of teachers tend to do. Then they wonder why the kids don’t respect them!

And then you, Stanley, will be one of the many that would rather believe conspiracy theories than science and reality.

Or like so many you’ll live in a world constructed for you by others.

On a regular basis I use my 7th grade geometry. Damn you Mrs. March!

About 16 years ago I provided training to public librarians on health reference. It included a session on medical terminology, by my hospital’s regular teacher of same, based on breaking words down into their Greek and Latin roots. Then I taught them how to search the PubMed database. It was fun listening to them breaking down the terms I used in examples.

We have separation of church and state. Now it is time to consider separation of education and state.

Stanley needs to learn science. Canada is way behind their southern neighbor. My country put a man on the moon. Maybe Stanley could be the first Canadian to land on the Sun!

Education helps to dissect the problems of life! difference between sucess and failure!

Commentary from China, India, and Japan: Yes Canada, we would like it that your public schools focus on making sure your kids get political drivel and focus on cruising chicks instead of worrying about math, geography, or dissecting frogs….

I once said, “Why do I have to learn the quadratic equation? I’m never gonna need it.” Later as a software engineer I ended up using the cubic equation which is the quadratic equation on steroids.
