At our advanced ages [80’s], my wife and I simplified the gift thing a decade or so ago. One says, is there anything you need for your [name the event]? Reply, can’t think of anything right off hand. How about you? Joint conclusion, why don’t we just skip it again this year, unless something comes up we might want?OK. Fine by me. Problem solved. Peace reigns.

About 20 years ago we heard about “Buy Nothing Day.” We celebrated the day and have expanded to Buy Nothing Week and now Month. Except for food, gasoline, utilities and normal stuff, but no mad rush to the malls or shops, online or brick. And no credit card usage for anything. It can be done.

I’ll have black out friday from overeating! Budget went to food, so can’t waste it (and holiday food doesn’t have calories.)
