If you voted for Teddy Roosevelt, you’re a plugger. And you’re kinda old.

I was too young to vote but old enough to stuff envelopes for Bobby. He would have won if he had not been assassinated. We might be better off now.

In 1968, voting machines were giant metal boxes with levers and curtains.

I continue with a write-in vote for Donald Duck. I figure his cabinet would include Uncle Scrooge (Treasury) and Huey, Dewey, and Louie in any three other cabinet posts and won’t be worse than the party hacks the “real” politicians select.

And it expresses my disdain for the party nonsense.

Next, rid ourselves of the Electoral College and make it a genuine democracy, not an oligarchy. (And enjoy the recount squabbles!)

Got my vote … here are couple (of many) statements that swayed me !> Slogan – … “We can’t stand Pat”> Foreign Affaires… doesn’t want to talk about them … happened in Naples> War Record -… killed ten men in WWII … smoking behind the ammo dump> On Taxes -… great state … wouldn’t want to live there> Told to up his standards … said he did … “now up yours.”

I remember (from junior high) when they first televised debates between Nixon and Kennedy (1960) and I worried that people were going to pay more attention to what they saw rather than what they heard. Ever since then I have worried when ‘professional’ actors run for office because they, by definition, play to an audience. They want to be liked, appreciated, etc. They know how to ‘play a role’ regardless of their personal beliefs. Of course, anyone in the public eye has to learn how to appeal to an audience, but they have to learn to do so as they campaign and their whole life has not been one of assuming roles at the drop of a hat. So I don’t ‘watch’ political speeches—I read the transcripts. That’s the only way I can make sure I think about what is being said and not get emotionally drawn by the appearance, rhythm and tone of the speaker.

Let’s see…I was getting ready to turn 12. But I DO remember all the political advertising. I think that election was the first time I became aware of this thing called “an election.”

I didn’t vote for him but I did inadvertently attend a pep rally for him that was aired on the Smothers Brothers Show. It was during intermission between the opening band and Steppenwolf at the Santa Monica Civic circa 1968! Born to be Wild!!

I sent for and received a transcript of one of Paulsen’s political speeches from the show. I still have it and I still laugh every time I read it.

Sometime in the mid 80’s, Pat Paulsen came in the restaurant where I cooked in Oceanside, California. Really nice guy, he was with a lady, his wife I guess. Probably the most famous person I ever cooked for.

Does anyone know just how many votes Pat Paulsen got in 1968 and from which states? Two sources told me 60,000 and 200,000
