I think it’s not (quite) that bad†. Of the 48% or so of the voters who chose the mango mistake, I think only about half, maybe only 1/3 are deliberate and knowing white supremacists. Just based on my feeling, no statistics at hand.
† It’s still horrible that there are so many white racists, though.
From the National Geographic, in an email sent today: “Ditching the Confederacy: Mississippians voted overwhelmingly for a new state flag, without the confederate symbol placed in it by segregationists in 1894. The new flag, featuring a magnolia, the state flower, had bipartisan support, the Clarion-Ledger reports. “I have a renewed sense of hope for my grandchildren and great grandchildren,” says flag commission chairman Reuben Anderson, the first African American to serve on the state Supreme Court.” Maybe things are not as bad as you (th)ink.
I can’t really pretend to figure it out. I’d have guessed that race has much to do with it, and perhaps that’s the best explanation. Note that a great many Biden voters do not and will not deal with blacks. My parents are gone, but they’d never have voted for Mr Trump: they were essentially Jewish liberals. Yet we (who were restricted as to where we could buy a house because it was 1956) nevertheless stayed as far as we could from Cleveland’s black populace. We’ve never before had an uncloseted racist run successfully for President (Mr Trump is a better salesman than George Wallace was) and now that we have had one, look at what we’ve discovered about ourselves. It’s a start, I think.
Delusions of grandeur. They think voting for the rich to be richer will somehow make them rich.
Kind of like those poor people that give their life savings to televangelists thinking somehow that money will come back to them for doing so. The only one that gets anything out of that transaction is the televangelist that can buy multiple private jets and mansions. Same goes for those that vote for tax cuts for the rich, who already had ways to avoid paying taxes on most of their income.
It’s hard to get people to let go of their delusions.
At this time, I believe our nation is dominated by descendants of the Anglo-Saxons. However, within the next few decades, that status is due to change. Meanwhile, the white supremacists are attempting to control as much of our culture as possible.

The Republicans didn’t have a platform, but they did have a slogan: “Yes, we kkklan!”

Racism is so ingrained where I’m at, that even the minorities I talk with think it’s OK.

Biden has four years to try to change attitudes that have lasted for hundreds. He better start now.
