The plural of mongoose is “mongeese” and also, “mongooses.” That’s in the Oxford American Dictionary.

Considering the alternatives, that’s a good problem to have.

Dear Sir: Please send me two mongoose.

    “No, that can’t be right.”

Dear Sir: Please send me two mongeese.

“No, that doesn’t feel right either.”

Dear Sir: Please send me two mongooses.

    “No, that’s not it.”

Dear Sir: Please send me a mongoose.

    P.S. Please send me another.

    “That’s it!”

    Singulars and plurals,

Are so different, bless my soul,

Has it ever occurred to you,

That the plural of ‘half’ is ‘whole’?

If one is a goose & two are geese, and if one is a tooth and two are teeth, then it should be mongoose/mongeese, moose/meese and booth/beeth.

If you have a louse, a mouse & a house, then you should get lice, mice & hice.

If you have one ox and two oxen, then you should have box/boxen & fox/foxen.

When Ben Casey meets Jim Kildare, that’s called a paradocs. When you should find romance. You’ll pant and pant once more. And that’s a pair of pants! My replies are based from Allan Sherman.
