Wow. One of my favorites hits the re-runs. Darnit. However, since I’m retired already, I guess I’d better grant the same to others.

Well deserved play time. You more than earned it. Enjoy. It seems ironic that this should come literally 2 days before what will probably be the most significant election in the country’s history. I was really looking forward to your views on this in the coming week or weeks. And I hope your request is fulfilled in spades.

What a career. Tom Toles made me laugh. He made me think. He stoked my indignation. He often did those three things at the same time, which was always jarring. I hope Mr. Toles enjoys a long retirement and sees some of the change he fought for.

    Mornings and evenings and afternoons,

we’ve gained by perusing Toles’s cartoons

and we’ve laughed and we’ve learned thru insightful lampoons

    of politicians as risible goons

{and of Trump, – who with Hitler and Nixon communes

as the utmost quintessence of Looney Tunes}.

Well this one caught me by surprise. One of the greatest political cartoonists of all-time, a Pulitzer Prize winner. Unashamedly liberal but always willing to call out dishonesty or corruption regardless of party, he was the unequaled master of the double-entendre and his caricatures were second to none. And always with his cartoonist’s aside delivered from his drawing table in the lower right hand corner. Brilliant. His voice will be sorely missed.

Found Mr. Toles in the early 1980’s when I “lived” in Western New York and took the Buffalo paper. Got his Mr. Gazoo book when it came out. Loved his take on the state of our existence. He will be missed. I hope, like so many comic strips here, his older work is rerun.

When you get old (and retired), such as I have done, you tend to fall into little daily routines. One such little routine was enjoying Mr. Toles’ daily offering. It often made me think, sometimes made me mad, but always, always, made me smile (even when I disagreed). But when you’re old (and retired), such as I am, it’s a wrench when your routines are disrupted or abruptly ended. But I console myself by thinking of how I have been enriched by Mr. Toles, and I can only add to the accolades my own poor “Well done, Sir. Thank you, and God Speed.”

Dear Tom, I didn’t see this coming, but there’s a time when everybody moves on. I wish you a happy retirement, you will be dearly missed! I did not commented much on your comic, but rest assure there was not a day going by without visiting your work! As I read your farewell, I wanted to cry, I’m gonna miss that little guy on his working table on the bottom corner of every single last panel with that clever comment to wrap the conversation up. You are loved and respected by us, your die hard audience! This is not a goodbye, it is a salute to you sir, we may come across somewhere else like on social media as an example, if we do, please say hi, you will always have a friend on me! (@EngelAnael, Twitter) If we don’t for any reason, I wish you, your loved ones, and friends all the best!P.S. Let’s vote for a better tomorrow and to rescue a nation held captive by… “and I agree with Tom on this…” that maniac! We need someone with morals and a good heart back on the White House!

I, too, started out 50 years ago at my college newspaper as a long-haired liberal editorial cartoonist (majoring in engineering). Alas, I opted for a job in the corporate world. I remained an avid consumer of cartoons, especially political commentary, with some pangs of regret that I did not pursue that direction. Tom Toles’ work has been a favorite of mine for many years. This news comes as a shock. I wish Tom well in his retirement, but mine will no longer be the same without a daily dose of his art to ponder and appreciate.

Happy retirement, Mr. Toles. I’ve read your work in the Washington Post for years. You were right up there with Herbert Block and Pat Oliphant! God willing, we will elect Biden/Harris in a few days and flip the Senate from red to blue! Then we will start doing what Trump SHOULD have done with Covid back in February and March (i.e. national mask mandates, listening to the experts, etc.)! Oh, and rejoining the Paris Accord on climate change. We likely won’t fix all the damage Trump caused in the next four years (it’s easier to break things than fix them, after all), but putting the grownups back in charge will be an important first step! As James Baldwin wrote, “Not every problem that is faced can be solved, but no problem can be solved that isn’t faced”.

A situation of national significance arises. It lands on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. What is the president’s initial reaction?

     • George H. W. Bush: “What is the decent thing to do?”

     • George W. Bush: “What is the expedient thing to do?”

Well, have a good life (I’m retired too and am enjoying it) and thank you so very much for your wonderful editorial cartoons. And do not worry, Trump will NOT be our president come January 2021. Is there ever going to be a “Classic Toles”? Or would it be deemed too topical?

It’s way past time for GoComics to weed what they offer.

Many thanks for the effort and the last one is a classic. Equal to the final episode of the Bob Newhart show!
