I remember those candy bead necklaces, and the sticky mouth and neck that came with eating it…..good times!

I remember having to hide my candy bag because we kids ate lunch at school but Dad went home for lunch. If you didn’t hide your stash, you could be sure the best bits would be missing when you got home that afternoon.

I remember a different, kinder, gentler time when we knew all our neighbours and it was safe to get things like fresh apples, candied apples, popcorn balls (my grandmother made 250 one year- and ran out!) and all sorts of other home-made goodies. There was even a man on our block who worked for Canada Packers and handed out individually wrapped wieners!

There were 40 houses on our street & we would collect enough loot at one go to half-fill a pillowcase. It got so heavy we would unload at the halfway point and then do the rest. Very few houses had their lights off.

I never knew how much candy to get when I was in a house. Some years, only a few kids came, other years so many came I would run out. I usually over-bought candy and wound up taking the rest to work.
