    Is she surprised?

Most banks around here have charged fees for checking accounts for years.

I have a couple of free ones, but they’re getting scarce.

One bank started “charging” a fee on paper, a few years ago, but said I “qualified” for “fee waivers.”

Since then, the invisible fee has crept up from something like $2.50 to $24 a month…. but my 10 transactions a month kept it free.

They’ve suddenly announced an outrageous new minimum balance requirement… something like $7,000, at no interest!

Starting in a few weeks, if it ever dips below that, even for moments, I have to actually pay the $24.

The way a checking account works, is that the bank gets your income, basically borrowing it from you at no interest…

They make money with it, while handing it back to you in secure little bits so you can pay stores and bills.

Now they want me to pay them $24 a month for using my money, unless they get $7,000 to play with at every moment.

Buh bye, bank… it’s been swell.

That sounds like one of those payday loan operations, with 250% APR.
