Truth be told, at this stage of the illness masks probably are that are not involved in providing additional oxygen are probably uncomfortable for him, though he should not expose others. If you look at the video he is mouth gulping air (something he also was doing after exiting the helicopter when he arrived for the Bedminster event so I still can not figure out why someone there did not immediately use a pulse oximeter on him) and it was obvious before and during his short comments arriving at the WH that he felt a deep need to try to fill his lungs but that doing so was very painful for him. Heck, it is even painful to just watch, even for those of us who dislike the man. For a man in his shape he is going to be at risk of crashing again through about day 12 after onset, with the second half of that the most risky. Now, the WH has a state of the art clinic but it is not a hospital, so this choice is not a well considered one, probably more of a gut one.

He may have convinced himself that if he’s feeling a little better, improvement can only continue… and with increasing rapidity, but…

1) That is not a “given”. In fact, many covid-19 sufferers have gotten worse again after an initial improvement. Some have even died.

2) Considering the amount of medication, oxygen, etc. that he’s been given, it’s arrogant foolishness to claim that his body has defeated it… even if it were true that it’s “defeated”.

3) Since he’s still being given medication, it’s obvious that the doctors don’t believe that he’s “over” it. And the fact that he’s “allowing” (I might even suspect “insisting”) that the medication continue suggests that even he knows he’s not over it… at least not yet.

4) He’s said — on returning to the White House — that he now feels better than he did 20 years ago. Has anybody checked to see whether there was a time 20 years ago when he was seriously ill or injured or whether there might be some other reason that he would have been feeling especially poorly in that time period?
