I’m glad I never was into organized sports (other than Saturday morning bowling leagues). Just too much structure and too many rules for free spirited me to deal with.
Don’t you hate when you have a perfect quote in mine, but you’re not sure of the phrasing and you can’t find it with google? “I have never helped to organize youth and as a youth, I successfully avoided being organized.” — C. S. Lewis (Yea, I can’t find the exact text)
These strips that end with a character repeating the last thing another character said are pretty funny. It is an odd way to end a strip, so your mileage may vary.
What I think Schulz was doing here was drawing a parallel with other sports, most likely (U.S.) football, where a player can be penalized for an equipment violation. It could be a real safety issue if a player isn’t wearing all his pads or has one on incorrectly. But the parallel would be a penalty on a player for something like an untucked jersey, which is more of a technicality like “improper mittens”, which is why Sally is upset at the penalty.

I’m with Sally’s older brother on this one. How does one get penalized for “improper mittens”?

When they want to disqualify you, they’ll find a way, even if it’s for “using a left-hand sit instead of a right-hand sit.” (Dog obedience trials)

Sally needs to file a formal protest with the league organizers.

They were red mittens, and Sally was caught red-handed.

Perhaps Sally was using oven mittens instead of outdoor snow mittens …

With adults come rules. Rules should be made by the kid when she is playing, like Calvin ball.
