“The group has been called “the prototypical icon of human agony” in Western art, and unlike the agony often depicted in Christian art showing the Passion of Jesus and martyrs, this suffering has no redemptive power or reward."
I teach middle school and students always ask, “Why do I need to learn this?”
My answer is always, “So you get the joke”.
Comics like this prove me right. If you know the image, you get the joke. You understand the point. I had seen the image before, but didn’t really know the story. My education is wide, but not very deep in some places. The image made an impact, but it didn’t hit home until toondel5 and A#455 pointed us in the right direction.
