Actually, Bud Fisher — one of the first cartoonists to become a wealthy, big-time celebrity — handed off the work to another artist/writer in 1932 and dedicated himself to spending the money. Came to sad, lonely end, I understand. His ghost worked on the strip for 50 years, eventually getting to sign his own name (Al Smith) after Fisher died in the 1950s. Notice this strip carries no signature at all.

Since the strip started in1907, this strip was probably around 1957 or a little later.
