That fur actually would insulate him, keeping the heat in – not letting it out for everyone to share.

The muff on Nancy’s hands is definitely an artifact of post-WW II popular culture in the USA.

How so? After the rationing and deprivations of the war, Americans were eager to splurge on luxury items. That was the era when fur coats were everywhere, and beyond any practical purpose, they functioned as status symbols. They meant that the woman had money to spend on expensive items… or that the man in her life did.

Problem was, despite the upturn in the economy, most of the rising middle class still couldn’t afford mink coats and their like. Solution? Small items of genuine fur. TA-DA! Muffs for an entire generation of little girls, proclaiming to the world: " We are prosperous enough to give our children luxurious items!"_

Muff actually looks like it would keep your hands warmer than today’s solution of gloves.

Looks almost like Dawg Flagstone, who (I looked it up) probably hit the comics pages the same year with his owners Hi and Lois (maybe earlier with Lois’s – nee Bailey – brother Beetle).
