    A Modest Proposal

Reduce our military budget to something significantly less that what the rest of the entire world spends on their military. Being the world’s policeman is expensive.

Guess he feels it is far better to tie old folks to the tracks than it would be to raise taxes on those who can afford to pay more. Particularly since actual taxes paid by the wealthiest folks have dropped over 10% in the last decade, while those in the bottom 99 percentile have dropped less than two-tenths of a percent in the same time frame.

Just a few facts for the discussion: compared to the bush years, revenue is down $500 billion even though the tax rate is the same, probably due to poor economy. Spending is up $1 trillion annually. That is how we arrived at the $1.5 annual deficit. Not sure what is to blame?

the GOP and Speaker Boehner clearly exempted current retirees on Medicare from reforms proposed! The changes would allow younger workers to plan for later retirement (better matching life expectancy ages) with additional retirement savings to augment Social Security, which was never planned for a retiree’s total income.

non-partisan and even some Democrat sources have judged the GOP proposals “good” and “needed” to save the system.

Hey, Tigger, how about this? We outlaw all Chinese imports suddenly and completely, and require all businesses dealing in China to cancel all their present orders.

The Chinese economy collapses and the whole nation dissolves into chaos as tens of millions of people are thrown out of work.

This scenario is more likely than the one you postulate. In fact, if the Chinese suddenly “called the loan” we would default, unable to pay. All the Chinese could do is seize American assets in China, which would accomplish little, or declare war. Either way, the economy of both countries would probably collapse.

In other words, it is “Mutually Assured Destruction” as in the cold war. The Chinese can’t afford to see our economy collapse any more than we can afford to see theirs do so.

Many a nation has gone bankrupt in the last hundred years, and never even once has it led to a creditor nation “taking over the government” of the debtor nation.

You know, in China when you’re one in a million, that means that there are 1,350 more just like you,
