I love to watch my dog get a scent and trace it out. Follow, retrench, follow, retrench, ……..as I look at the squirrel sitting on the fence. Eventually she zeroes in on the prey.
‘It was a huge deal when humans evolved the ability to stand upright.’ Not to mention Scratch the cat, the mice, and the rabbits standing upright. It apparently gave them language to speak to the humans. And also started a clothing fashion industry for cats, mice and rabbits.
We were walking our Flat-coated retriever late at night and she paused by a big maple tree. We looked and she was about a foot from a skunk. No barking or aggression and we just gently pulled her back and the skunk turned and walked away. She’s one gentle dog for being 100 pounds.
I had a cat who, although an indoor/outdoor cat, enjoyed going on half-hour-long walks with me. One reason is that I could see threats before he could. He learned very early what “Watch out!” meant. He did not require a leash.

I try that with mine, except its goat and sheep crap, with one you can win, with two or more, not a chance!
