    I once arrived at a diner just as a grackle perched in the scruffy little orange tree out front and started — well, I guess you could call it “singing”, although no grackle is capable of making any sound you or I would call musical.

    But his performance seemed to go on for ages. I don’t speak bird, but I could tell that certain phrases were getting repeated in different combinations, so I figure I was hearing the whole story of his life and aspirations.

    Took me ten minutes before I could tear myself away from listening and go inside for my breakfast.

    the restaurant at the Harbor in Santa Barbara has grackles out – they’re very talkative and entertaining. Hoping the green herons are still safely nesting/roosting outside of the Best Western too.
