If you bring half the number of kids into what was an overcrowded class space, how many of them will bring Covid-19 home before schools are closed again?
For extra credit: What percentage of your community has been tested for Covid-19? For super extra credit, how many of those tests gave results in less than 3 days (so there’s a chance that contact tracing could possibly work)?
I was moderately amused that the school administrator who was explaining all this on TV yesterday used example numbers that did not add up
I’m not able to quote exactly but something like: “Instead of 30 kids every day, we’ll have 20 on Monday and Tuesday and then a different 20 on Thursday and Friday so there’s time to sanitize the classrooms on Wednesday and the weekend between the half-size classes.”
I am a retired teacher so this debate about going back to school or not hits very close to home. Here is how I see it. Of course, it would be best for schools to be open for classes. Regular classes. There are so many great things that happen for kids in school. The learning and education, although the most important thing, is just the beginning. (And obviously, on-line learning is not a good substitute.) The socialization is important. The sports and activities too. Don’t forget the child-care for working parents. But, you have to look at the problems and issues too. Will buildings full of people be a cause of massively increased spread of covid? Will that lead to huge numbers of deaths? As things stand now the it sure looks like it would. So, it would require an enormous amount of money to make the buildings and buses safer. Unless taxpayers and government are willing to come up with that money it just does not seem like a good idea to have students attend classes at school.
You mean they actually have papers and pencils ! Must have a great teacher that can afford their school supplies. Maybe the teacher will give them lunch money . . .
Many children, when they are growing up, experience accident or other misfortune that causes them to be away from school for a month or so. No study has found this to be a soul-destroying hardship. Today’s kids can even keep in touch with each other and continue their education. I admit children having to stay home is harder on the parents but that’s the price of being a parent. We are talking about LIVES here.

What? Our school district went with Mon-Tue the 1st half of the alphabet and Thu-Fri the 2nd half of the alphabet. Wednesday used to recoup supplies and thoroughly sanitize the school environment for kids and staffers. Only Conservative nitwits would think about making going to school safely extremely difficult, complicated, and nonsensical.

Republicans are pushing this because their kids go to exclusive private schools.
