^economic viability was just fine until the “auto companies” - like Chevron, Texaco, Phillips, Standard, Shell et al sold the public a bill of goods. The interstate highway system wasn’t a bad idea, it just should have incorporated rail at the same time. Poor land use planning went right along with the oil company created model, and oops!
