Jim Banks sponsored a bill that would take away federal funding from any school that didn’t reopen by September 8th. It would allow Betsy Devoid the authority to make the decision on each school.
Wouldn’t each district have a better idea on how the virus is effecting their area. Republicans, for state and local control, except when they are not
Mostly likely a plan to shift more money to religious and charter schools.
I am a retired high school teacher. I find this cartoon extremely interesting. I have been making the comparison between defund the police and schools myself. I believe one of the ways public education has gone wrong in recent years is that schools now try to do too much. They have strayed from their true purpose; educating the young in history, reading, math, and science. They have added social workers, psychologists and countless other people and functions. They are trying to do too much and not doing anything all that well anymore. Maybe those things (and many others) would be done better by other public institutions. This would be a long discussion that is too big for here. But, I took my thoughts about what has gone wrong in public schools and compared it to the police. That is exactly what defund police means. Police departments are asked to do too much. Things they weren’t designed to do. Scale their responsibilities back a bit and take some money from their budget to accomplish it.
“Even without the right to vote, the group was extremely influential. They lobbied local governments to erect memorials to the Confederacy all over the South, including in prominent public spaces like courthouses and state capitols. They formed textbook committees and pressured school boards to ban books that the UDC deemed ‘unjust to the South,’ which was anything that shed negative light on the Confederacy.” – https://www.vox.com/videos/2017/10/25/16545362/southern-socialites-civil-war-history
Wasn’t there a Betsy that created a flag to represent Freedom? Now a Lady named Betsy who contributed millions to be put in a position of power by Trump to deny free education to those without money. Will the difference be taught in charter schools?
All the screaming above, none of it addressed that fact that the douchebags that defaced statues in Washington D.C. and NYC damaged some that represented views that they ‘supposedly’ were demonstrating for.
Taking down statues is one thing. Unilaterally removing them is another. In a democracy, the first should always be on the table, but the second is an act of totalitarian arrogance. These people aren’t protestors. They are political vandals.
This is true, actually, although it had to do with people who were relatively unknown, and thus the protesters probably assumed that they were colonizers.
This makes it all the more important to install plaques next to every statue to explain the context of the person’s life. That way, viewers would know what they did, and would not take down statues to abolitionists.
Some truth in this. In cosmopolitan Madison, Wisc. some zanies decapitated and generally messed up the elegant bronze statue of Christian Heg—immigrant, prison reformer, and an ardent abolitionist as well as a capable leader of a Union regiment in the Late Unpleasantness who lost his life at the Battle of Chickamauga. All the things that our “president” hates. Not everyone who fought in the Civil War was an enemy of the Constitution.
Why haven’t they stormed the National Portrait Gallery to remove the bust of Margaret Sanger? Now there was an unashamed racist. An advocate of eugenics (for blacks), guest speaker at KKK events.
Not a word about her from the BLM-ANTIFA cancel freaks.
Do people learn history from a statue? I’ve seen first hand how ignorant Americans can be when it come to history and science. Wasn’t history every bodies favorite subject in high school? (cue the eye roll) People watch a History Channel documentary and think they know it all.Furthermore, when has public education ever been fully funded? What if schools were as easily funded as defense contractors? Remember you get what you pay for. In this case, it might be an ignorant electorate that is easily manipulated.
The usual strawman crap from the right. I had thought Ramirez was finally beginning to understand, but I guess he just couldn’t STAND it when some rioters who claimed to be BLM supporters acted stupid in yet another way.
Like it or not, Michael’s point is right on…Public education – FailIn Boston, the Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Regiment Memorial was one of 16 public artworks damaged when thousands of protesters swarmed Boston Common May 31, according to public radio station WBUR-FM,The sculpture honors African-American soldiers who fought in the Civil War.“This monument is considered one of the nation’s greatest pieces of public art and the greatest piece to come out of the Civil War,” Friends of the Public Garden executive director Liz Vizza told the station. “It was, amazingly enough, dedicated 123 years ago on May 31st – the day it was defaced.”
Changing the way schools are funded would be a better start. As it is, property taxes paid by the well-to-do guarantee better schools. The system truly is designed to keep the poor down and out. Beginning at kindergarten. (Ok – before that if you consider health care designed to keep children’s brains and bodies growing correctly is not available to the poor. A fact Trump is working to ensure.)

It’s really too bad that Trump University is gone, Betsy DeVos could have diverted all those public education dollars directly to her boss…. MAGA

Taking down a statue is not rewriting history. It’s just stopping glorifying people who don’t deserve it.

Defunding public education is a fait accompli. After all, education is just wasted on the lower 99%. It just makes them discontented and irritable. /s

Yup, Mike is actually correct about the incident with this particular statue of Heg.
There are idiots in every group.
Unfortunately, the biggest idiot on the “right” is sitting in the oval office. (Or more likely, on the golf course).
