That’s the new “White Power” flag ?. . . . so to speak. It’s been long time in coming and the old one laid to rest. Let’s rally ’round one flag that stands for The UNITED STATES.

They’re going to have a “process” to create a new flag. I’m just hoping they don’t decide something even worse than using that as only ¼ of it.

If only! The South did not give up that easy at the end of the Civil war nor will they will now, Ban all remaining icons of the rebellion!

Not quite yet, I think…

We’ll see what replaces it. Probably the NRA logo.

They will go with a big cross.

Their new flag should just be the white flag with “Flaggy McFlagface” written on it.

Let’s pause a second. In the last few days, Princeton took Wilson’s name off their school of public policy; Mississippi voted to remove the battle flag from their state flag. Two small and symbolic steps of truth and reconciliation that were impossible a month ago.

This is a hinge moment larger than any I’ve lived through in my 60+ years.

Like Rip Van Winkle, some folks have only just “woken” up in the last month.

It’s a start.

I notice that the law mandating the removal of the flag also requires that the new flag have “IN GOD WE TRUST” on it. Like Federal Reserve note dollars, a spit in the face for the concept of separation of church and state.

What should have happened on April 9, 1865.

It is NOT that easy. Mark my words.

To think the Confederacy surrendered knowing their legacy would continue to be honored by people in the country. Anyone who carries and celebrates the flag isn’t an American, they are a Confederate and should be treated as such.

I doubt this will change the hearts of many trump fellows

The Dixie Chicks are officially changing their name to “The Chicks,” and I’m torn. Although of course heavily associated with the Confederacy (the term predates the song, although there’s disagreement over how it arose), the excised word remains useful (and euphonious) as a generic term for the Southeast. And I hope “Dixieland Jazz” isn’t relegated to the dustbin… Besides which, “Dixie” provided a rhyme which took much of the sting off the sexism of “Chicks.”

Let us not forget the past or we may be bound to repeat it. I believe I heard those wise words before. ( Not verbatim. )

Brilliantly done. Bennett is one of the best (if not THE best) comic illustrators of our time. Give that man a Pulitzer.

No soon enough.

The rub is that we all discriminate all the time about everything: where we choose to live, what kind of car we drive, what movies we see, who we choose as friends, what church we go to or choose not to go to, who we elect, and on & on….and we are free to do so, mostly established by our Constitution…free to make up our minds, free to have our opinions. But the real issue is how we agree (and we can’t) on what unfair discrimination is and how to fix it…and we can’t, because we can and naturally do discriminate.

The odd thing is, that the colonies began as a CONFEDERACY, with a decentralized federal govt, and most power at the state level. After a decade, everyone realized it was not working, and the Constitutional Convention was begun. To survive as a nation, there must be a stronger (but not TOO strong) federal govt. Anyone who has read about the Civil War knows how a de-centralized govt falters. Georgia and North Carolina governors behaved like kings of a separate nation. and withheld much from the war effort.
