Calvin doesn’t realize it yet, but old joints just don’t move that fast… and even sadder, my mind seems to require a little more TLC to reach operative speed these days.
But I sure do believe that he’ll be going like a maniac until he isn’t able to.
When you retire, you have less to do (that requires you to do them nonetheless), but you tend to slow down because the optional activities are OPTIONAL. They can wait until tomorrow, or next week, next month, next year. :)
For myself and other semi-old people that I’ve observed, we may have cut back on the physical activity, but we’re going like maniacs trying to learn all the things we never made time for when we were younger. Calvin has an inquisitive mind and an active imagination. I’d bet that he’ll be that kind of old[er] man.
Each destination holds similar. The journey is ever changing. Takes some time and experience to know there is much to be had along the way and to want to enjoy the sights en route.
I’m going as fast as bad knees, bad hips, loss of ability to balance, and dimming eyesight will allow. I pretend that I’m stopping to smell the roses, but I’m actually just catching my breath—my sense of smell isn’t working all that well either.
Now that I am at the other end of the arc I would indeed be going faster than ever, if I could just remember what it is that I was going to do. Anyone know where I left the car keys? (Joking!)
You say that now, Calvin, but wait until things start hurting. Knees, hips, back, plantar fascia, etc. Then you’ll just be glad to be able to get up and do enough moving around so that, in the words of a physical therapist, “The motion is the lotion”.
