Gary, aren’t you one of the ones who would throw your own children off a cliff if it would make the Dow go up? What if the money that would go into more riot gear and tear gas went into growing the economy?
Refunding the police isn’t going exactly a mainstream Democratic position. But defunding public education is now a mainstream Republican position, and the Trump regime is pushing it. The damage is horrific.
No Varvel, the Democrats do not want to defund the police (though they may want to keep them from using military weapons), they want to force them to follow the laws they are supposed to be enforcing.
Here is what happens in the aftermath of violent protests in the black communities – The police presence and community engagement goes way down, as they are unwelcome. The result is crime goes up. This has been the trend in STL, Baltimore, LA, etc. Black folk suffer. Again. But this time at the hands of their own.
I approve it too! We allowed the military to dump all their excess war equipment from Iraq and Afghanistan on local law enforcement. They now think they are the military and are starting to behave like it. They’ve lost touch with those they are suppose to serve and protect. Too busy hiding behind all that military hardware.
Treat the police like a barrel of apples: If there’s a bad apple, get rid of it before the canker spreads to its neighbors. If the barrel is contaminated (management or union by analogy), get a new barrel… and then sanitize it… and thereafter only use it to store non-apples: Don’t let managers who’ve proven to be bad for cops continue to manage cops.
Lets be clear, defunding the police can be interpreted in so many ways. One way it could be interpreted is: stop funding the militarization of local law enforcement. Since many local law enforcement departments are funded by local tax revenues and revenue from citation fines, the power to defund local law enforcement is in the hands of the people not politicians.
It’s been proven time and time again that community policing works, especially when the officers live in the communities that they patrol. There is no need for them to have weapons of war when they are successfully interacting with their fellow citizens. This is especially evident in those cities where chiefs and officers marched side by side with protesters. Adversarial attitudes have no place in our communities and officers that can’t get past this need to be gotten rid of. What remains is people having a dialog, listening and finding solutions that everyone can get behind. In my little city of Lawrence, KS detectives were passing out bottled water and talking with the protesters in order to help them with the high temps this week and guess what? No escalation of any sort.
I do have a problem with the “defund” proposal is the reason so many areas have ended up with too many bad cops, is already underfunding law enforcement and lowering standards, been going on for a long time. Military toys don’t make good police forces, good people do, and keeping them requires fair pay, training, and a sense of self respect to do the job right.
Um, the police haven’t exactly made things all that great, now, have they? When people were peacefully protesting, they attacked. When they encounter unarmed (black) people, they pull guns on them and sometimes kill them. So maybe defunding them would be a good idea.NOT THAT GARY UNDERSTANDS WHAT THIS MEANS: Defunding does not mean eliminating all police. It means a couple of things. First it means reprioritizing money and investing less in cops and more into programs that actually improve lives — housing, mental and physical health, jobs creation, Education. Second, it means dumping the current policing model which only harms civic life and Re-learning what it means to serve and protect vs control and dominate. A couple of cities have already done this with great results.

The Democrats want the police to be accountable to the communities they serve. They DON’T want the police to be Donnie Amin’s personal brute squad.

Its the Republicans who scream socialism every time the police need funding.
