National Say Something Nice Day. I wish I could think of something nice to say, but a second night of riots & protests in Madison has left me dumbstruck – especially after what happened Saturday night. More on that later.
National Go Barefoot Day. It’ll be barefoot weather, but they won’t let us go barefoot at work. I’ll go barefoot until it’s time to leave for work, though.
I said in yesterday’s comments that all the Saturday night protests were in downtown Madison, well away from my Walmart. Well, when I got to work on Sunday morning, I found out we had been hit and looted too. Not on a grand scale – just enough to make my faith in my safety in the store a little bit shaky. It happened at around 1:00 Sunday morning (right about the time I was typing here that our Walmart had not been affected). A group of about 10 people smashed the glass in our cart door and entered the building. There are no associates in the store at the that hour. The criminals got away with a TV and some clothing – nothing major. By the time I got to work at 9:00 in the morning, there was no evidence of a break-in, except the big stacks of pallets in front of the cart door and the surrounding windows. There were also stacks of pallets of water near the exit doors, which I assume they have blocking those doors now that the store is closed for the night. With continued riots in Madison tonight (despite the curfew imposed by the mayor) I’m very afraid they’ll hit our store again tonight if there is any way for them to get inside. And I’m worried there could be more damage tonight. There is a police station just a few minutes down the road from our store, but with so many cops downtown handling that riot, I don’t know how many are available to the west side of town. It really isn’t about George Floyd’s needless death with these rioters. They’re just using that as an excuse to vandalize and loot stores. This is no way to honor anyone. We did not kill that man, so why are they doing things like this to us? I’m a little shaky and scared now. I’m trying not to be. I hope this ends soon, but I bet if that cop gets what is considered too light a sentence, we’ll be in for more riots in the future
Well, Chesney, I hate to tell you this, but gluing yourself to the floor will definitely mean a trip to the vet, to make sure the glue didn’t damage you in any way. Not that you will appreciate Annie’s loving care.
Off topic (what else is new?), Woo hoo! America has launched a ship into orbit with the astronauts on board and it docked with the Space Station yesterday successfully. It’s about time private enterprise took over!
I was law enforcement for many years and was there during the Watts riots in 1965. There is no way to explain the mob mentality. The mobs loses it’s original focus early on and then just feeds on “taking” and then burning what they leave. Their justification is pointless and uncaring. It’s a monster the grows then evolves and can finally be beaten back to it’s hole. In the meantime loses are great. Where I live now in central California there is not much rioting just some peaceful groups milling about. There is, however, lots of fireworks (which are illegal here) and my cats are terrified. It will pass..there is no cure.
Today Oliver learned not to do what Chesney does. On another note, saw some robins, two rabbits, a red tailed hawk, two juncos, and a tiger swallowtail butterfly while out walking today.
