I have never seen any of the “Rocky” movies. I don’t think they’d appeal to me. I am in all likelihood with Elvis in this matter.

I would gladly watch all the Rocky pictures all weekend if it would make the BLASTED FIREWORKS STOP. And the neverending cumbia loud enough to wake the dead AAAAARGGH. My cat is huddling terrified under the couch. Calling cops does nothing. MAKE IT STOP.

Compliments of the season to American viewers.

(And I apologise for being a bit late. I’ve only just realised that yesterday was the anniversary of your decision to cut yourselves off from the Crown. I hope you still think it was a good idea. There are an awful lot of back taxes to pay if you have changed your minds.)

Yesterday’s comments raised the awful spectre of people who don’t know “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”. In case there are any such pitiable creatures among us, here is the closest I can find to the original. It stars Peter Jones.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY8U3AP5bPk

This is episode 1, in which the Earth is destroyed and Arthur is tortured by the Vogons.

Funnily enough, I’ve never actually seen a Rocky film. Never seemed like my thing.

I hope all the other Americans here had a good Fourth! It’s not even 11 in my timezone and the fireworks are still going off, and Blossom has been my brave little protector and making sure I’m not bothered by the Loud Noises, since she is not scared, nope, not at all!

Purely on a lark! I decided to have a movie marathon as well! But instead of ‘Rocky’… it is Harry Potter. I needed to turn it all off and come to bed. As I type this the fireworks outside is subsiding. I has been going on STEADILY! for the past three hours! But the cats were already upset with me. The last movie on was Order of the Phoenix… where Fred and George fill the school with all sorts of fun fireworks to mess up the activity of Prof. Dolores Umbridge. I think the cats are plotting to get even!!! (Grin!)

Is the artwork is signed? Is this another Sophie masterpiece or did the Boys copy a photo (that looks remarkably like a young version of the Man) for Pucky to use during his discussion of the reasons Rocky is a folk hero?

There are a lot of things about “Rocky” that don’t bear talking about. It’s a triumph of willpower over (lack of) education and self-plagiarism.

I had plenty of fireworks going off all around last night. I knew that Sweetheart wasn’t going to be a problem, she never has, seeing Kiki just shrug them off was a big relief. She was in a cat-bun on the foot of the bed the whole time. She would look up at the widow occasionally, but that was it. :)

Saw the first one when it came out. Great B movie with A production values. Skipped the remainder. IRL Stallone sounds like a prison auto-didact like Damon Wayans’ character on “In Living Color.”

i recently read a book that presented the idea that rocky is a movie that a mostly there for the purpose of creating a white supremacy ideal in white peoples and that there are other popular movies that serve the same purpose. I read this in the Book stamped by… gimme a minute here looking it up… Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. I highly recommend reading it, it is sort of a narrative overview of how black racism came to be and how it developed and evolved over the ages.

Ms Dunn has nailed it. Or the wise kitties have. (Truthfully, I thought for a second they were talking about “Rocky And His Friends” with its tag line which is decidedly apropos these days, “He knew the job was dangerous when he took it”.)

The only one I’ve seen is 4. Not even 3, which is kind of surprising because, being a young boy for whom “The A-Team” was appointment television in 1983, I was a huge fan of Mr. T.

Today is Bikini Day, sacred to all sun worshipers and producers of sun-block.

I went to college in southern Florida, at a place infamously known as “Sun-Tan U.” We honor students hated the nickname, but I have to admit that it fit. Every expanse of sunlit concrete (even dorm rooftops!) or grass was covered with young women in two piece bathing suits or bikinis. You would think this a kind of paradise for men in the age range of 18 to 22. Nope. Just walking past on your way to class got you a lot of dirty looks. You may think the reason for that is obvious, and today it would be, but this was back in the late ’60s, early ’70s, when attitudes were a lot different in both sexes.

The young woman I was dating at the time was a native Floridian. She explained that the sunbathers were mostly from northern states, and these young women were getting tans to show off when they went home for the holidays. She also told me that many of them were there to get their Mrs.—and if a man didn’t look well-to-do, they weren’t interested. I certainly hope that has changed, and I shudder to think of the skin cancer rates. South Florida is sub-tropical, which means that in the warmer months it’s tropical, and the sun is fierce. All freshmen were required to wear a white “beany” hat. While this was a form of mild hazing, it also had a very practical purpose: preventing sun-sickness and even sunstroke in pasty-skinned damnyankees who didn’t realize the danger. To paraphrase: Mad dogs, Englishmen, and Damnyankees go out in the noonday sun.

So if you wear a bikini, wear sunblock.

I watched “A Capitol Fourth” on PBS last night. Had the shade up on my back porch window so I could see if my mother’s avatar/messenger (a female cardinal) would watch too. (She made an appearance; it was brief, but better than nothing. If my father’s avatar/messenger showed up, I missed it.)

Not as much of an emphasis on the “patriotic” this year – more songs advocating mutual love and understanding.

As it should be, especially this year.

This is a revision of a post I made earlier but I made a major FUBAR and ended up trashing the whole thread.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

    Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in BCN and I—

I took the one that was more sci-fi,

And it hasn’t made a metric bonker’s worth of difference.

I love the first three Rocky movies, the fourth was okay, but I haven’t seen the rest, and probably won’t. “Eye of the Tiger” was my theme song when recovering from a catastrophic spine injury. To strive. To do. And not to yield.

Cincinnati Ohio here. We’re famous for our chili, a sweeter chili that has cinnamon and chocolate in some recipes. (Skyline!) Our state’s flag is actually a pennant (triangular instead of square), our state candy is the Buckeye (a peanut butter and confectionery sugar concoction rolled into a ball and dipped most of the way into melted chocolate.) and we’re the only state to have a state rock song, Hang on Sloopy.

Doris Day, Nick Clooney (George’s Dad) Rosemary Clooney, (his Aunt), Pete Rose, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Wilbert and Orville Wright, and Steven Spielberg all call Cincy their birthplace. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_from_Cincinnati)

We’re home to the world’s longest, and best, wooden roller coaster, The Beast. That’s at Kings Island.

New Richmond, Ohio was one of the most used river crossings for the Underground Railroad. Ulysses S Grant, the Union General who won the Civil War, was born nearby in Point Pleasant, Ohio.

The Cincinnati Reds are the oldest professional Baseball team. They were originally the Cincinnati Redstockings.

Jerry Springer was once Cincinnati’s Mayor. He was stupid enough to pay a prostitute with a personal check. Making him one of the most embarrassing people to have called Cincinnati home.
