    Sadly that last line of Mr. Butts sounds like the kind of argument Big Tobacco might have made at the time to justify pushing cigarettes on soldiers once we knew the risks. As for WWII usage I remember once seeing a poem that had been written in a Japanese POW camp by an American prisoner who talked about how excruciating it was for the smokers to be cut off cold turkey.
