My dad lost a number of cats to varmints on his ranch. Eventually, he got a cat that hung out with the dogs and lived a reasonably long life. Cats have become a successful species by exhibiting a talent for adaptation. Only one species is known to thrive in more environments than cats – Man. I have occasionally seen unleashed cats “going for a walk” with dog and owner.
