Rob, it is possible to train a cat to use the toilet (YouTube has many videos showing this). You just can’t expect them to flush after using it though … much like many kids who often don’t flush either.
I trained my German shepherd to go outside in bad weather, do his business, and come back in. I walk him in good weather and he walks himself in bad weather. No litter box to deal with.
One thing not mentioned here is that only “intact” felines (those which have not been neutered or spayed) are the ones which will have the most malodorous litter boxes. In general, altered felines’ litter boxes are far easier to keep odor free.
